Thank you, David Smith, Newport School Superintendent, and Stratton Elementary Principal Jenny Erickson for allowing South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue to talk with all Stratton Second Grade classes about fire safety this week.

South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue Chief Shane Stocking gave fire safety presentations, including what to do when they hear a smoke alarm, how to exit a smoke-filled building, and how firefighters would help them out of a building.

In addition, Chief Stocking led demonstrations of crawling to escape a fire and how to outfit a firefighter in Bunker PPE Gear so the children would not be afraid to see or hear a fire fighter talking through their SCBA ( Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) mask.

After the classroom presentations, the children went outside to take tours of a Fire Engine and Ambulance conducted by SPOFR staff and volunteers. The students were able to sit inside an ambulance and look at the life-saving equipment onboard, as well as walk around a Fire Engine, while much of the equipment was explained and demonstrated.

Each student was given an information packet with a Chief’s Safety letter for the parents, along with coloring books and SPOFR Jr. Firefighter stickers.
